Apple TV+ No Longer Proceeding With Season Three Of ‘The Problem With Jon Stewart’

Hosted by Jon Stewart (The Daily Show, A Conspiracy Carol), The Problem with Jon Stewart first debuted in September 2021 on Apple TV+. With the second season having premiered in October 2022, the talk series was entering its third season. According to The Hollywood Reporter, despite production of the third season already beginning, Apple TV+ has decided to cancel The Problem with Jon Stewart.

As The Hollywood Reporter notes, the decision for the show’s cancellation came along at the same time creative differences were reported between Stewart and Apple. Specifically, there was tension over topics, such as what topics to cover and how to cover them, as well as guests. Sources told The Hollywood Reporter that, allegedly, Stewart wanted more creative control than Apple was letting him.

However, according to Variety, another source with knowledge about the cancellation claimed that the parting of Apple and Stewart was amicably done.

The premise of The Problem with Jon Stewart revolved around Stewart addressing prevalent issues in the world and speaking with featured guests about these issues and potential solutions. Topics of conversation included incarceration, public safety, poverty, inflation, and more. With one-hour-long episodes, the series first began premiering every two weeks but then switched to premiering weekly. Stewart also has had a podcast with Apple TV+ of the same name and premise dedicated to topics that did not make the show.

Throughout its run, The Problem with Jon Stewart has received five Emmy Awards nominations. For the upcoming 75th Primetime Emmy Awards set to premiere in January 2024, The Problem with Jon Stewart is nominated for Outstanding Talk Series.

In addition to Stewart, executive producers of the talk series included Brinda Adhikari (CBS This Morning, CBS Evening News with Jeff Glor), Richard Plepler (Black Bird, Lincoln’s Dilemma), and Stewart’s manager James Dixon (Night of Too Many Stars, That Damn Michael Che). Adhikari also served as the showrunner for the series.
