America Ferrera Wants to do an ‘Ugly Betty’ Revival Movie at Hulu

This past weekend, the cast of ABC’s Ugly Betty reunited at the ATX Festival in Austin, Texas. And if America Ferrera (Betty) has her way, there’s going to be more Ugly Betty in the future. According to Variety, Ferrera said she’d be down for Hulu reviving the series so they could do a movie on the streaming network.

And if fans want the show to be revived on Hulu, Ferrera joked that “Everybody here take out your phone. Hashtag: Betty Reboot. We need a hashtag and tweet it out and then we’re going to get Hulu to buy a two-hour special.”

The showrunner of Ugly Betty, Silvio Horta, said a revival of the show would only happen if they could get everyone who was involved in the original show to come back to do the potential revival. Ferrera responded to that by saying it only took “20 minutes for everyone to say yes to my email to be at ATX!”

Other cast members who were at the panel include Michael Urie, Tony Plana, Eric Mabius, Ana Ortiz, Vanessa Williams, Mark Indelicato, Rebecca Romijn, Ashley Jensen and Judith Light.

Ugly Betty ran for four seasons on ABC, from September 2006 through April 2010, when the show was canceled due to low ratings. The show centers on Becky Suarez as a Mexican-American woman from Queens. Despite her lack of fashion sense, she lands a job at the fictitious Mode magazine as a personal assistant to Daniel Bradford (Eric Mabius), the new editor-in-chief of the magazine. Salma Hayek served as one of the executive producers of the show during its original run.

Talking about her character, Ferrera says that she enjoyed playing the character and said the cancellation of the show was “like losing a family.”

This also isn’t the first time that a cast has dropped hints to Hulu that they’d want to do a reunion. Just last month, the cast of Happy Endings dropped major hints during a panel that they all would sign on for a reboot of the show, especially since all the episodes are available to stream on Hulu.

If the Ugly Betty revival movie does end up happening, it wouldn’t the first time that a cast reunion at the festival would lead to a revival on a streaming network. Last year, the cast of Gilmore Girls reunited at the festival, which is when talks between show creator Amy Sherman-Palladino and Netflix started. And as fans of Gilmore Girls know, a revival is coming to Netflix – with Melissa McCarthy finally returning to show.

Even if the show doesn’t get a revival movie on Hulu, fans of Ugly Betty can go back and watch all the episodes on the streaming site to hopefully tide them over.
