Next Games and AMC announced that they are working on a mobile games based on the hit series.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the cable network announced a pact with the Finnish game developer, Next Games, to create the first mobile games based on the popular tv series drama. The two teams are preparing the launch of the untitled Walking Dead game for October, when the fifth season of the series will premiere. The mobile game is said to be global in sale, with distribution and marketing across continents.
The game plot details are being kept secret, but Next Games vowed that it would have the same tension as the tv series. “Our take on the undead survival franchise will match the against-all-odds action and moment-to-moment tension of the TV series. We want to find that sweet spot where gameplay and narrative inform and reinforce one another,” said Next Games CEO Teemu Huuhtanen. “Like AMC’s The Walking Dead itself, we’re not giving away too many details right out the gate, but I can confidently state it’s unlike anything we’ve seen from The Walking Dead franchise on home or mobile gaming hardware before.”
Next Games was founded by design veterans Rovio, Supercell and Disney and it focused on rafting narrative-driven titles with engaging free-to-play mechanics.
Charlie Collier, the AMC president said “We chose to team up with Next Games because of their outstanding creative and technical talent, as well as a willingness to reimagine the unique and compelling world of The Walking Dead, which has built a significant and passionate global fan community,” He continued by saying: “We’re thrilled to be part of this next wave of games innovation and participating in a project that — like the show itself — is in service of the fans.”
The Walking Dead is the No. 1 show among 18-49 demographic and is also a global franchise that constantly ranks in the top in several countries worldwide. The TV series are based on the comics with the same name created by Robert Kirkman (who also exec. produce the show) and are on its 123rd issue, distributed in many languages, worldwide.
There is also a board game project launched on Kickstarter from the game developers MegaGigaOmniCorp and Top8Magic called The Walking Dead: The Prison. The board game features characters from the comic series and is being developed by Keith Tralins and Matt Wang.
Additional information about the mobile game will be announced in the next months, as noted by THR. The Walking Dead airs on Sundays at 9 p.m. on AMC and there aren’t any details about the premiere date of the fifth season of the series.
