Amazon Announces Slate of German Originals, Including Adaptation of Wolfgang Holbein’s ‘The Gryphon’

Amazon Prime Video announced a slate of German original series at a Tuesday event, according to Deadline. Among the most notable of these new projects is a limited series adaptation of Wolfgang Holbein’s novel The Gryphon, which is to be produced by DogHaus Film and W&B Television (Dark).

The Gryphon follows three outsiders who discover the Black Tower, a world where the Griffin, “a world-devouring monster,” has abused the other denizens of the world for centuries, according to Deadline. These friends must put a stop to the Griffin.

The series will be comprised of six forty-five minute episodes, helmed by showrunners Erol Yesilkaya (Tatort) and Sebastian Marka (Exit), according to Variety.

Here is the rest of the new content announced Tuesday:

Luden: a six-part series set in Hamburg’s red light district in the 1970s. The series will be produced by Neuesuper and is to be written by Niklas Hoffman, Peter Kocyla, Vivien Hoppe and Rafael Parente.

Gefesselt (working title): a six-part series that follows the search for a Hamburg serial killer, set between 1986 and 1992. The series is set to release in 2022.

Unzensiert – Bushido’s Wahrheit: a docu-series about rapper Bushido, who also co-founded record label esguterjunge.

Untitled FC Bayern Munich documentary: behind-the-scenes docu-series about soccer team FC Bayern Munich that is due later in 2021.

In addition to new series, season 2 of LOL: Last One Laughing, a German comedy series, will be released April 1, according to Variety. Other German originals, Der Beischläfer and Binge Reloaded have new episodes and will have second seasons.

Director of European Amazon originals for Prime Video, Georgia Brown, said Amazon is excited excited to work with German creatives.

“We are dedicated to producing a curated slate of ambitious and high-quality German series across genres,” Brown said, according to Variety, “and are we are super excited to take those stories to 150 million Prime members around the world.”
