‘Adventure Time: Fionna and Cake’ Coming to HBO Max

HBO Max has decided to continue their storytelling in Cartoon Network’s Land of Ooo with a ten-episode Adventure Time spinoff, Adventure Time: Fionna and Cake. According to Variety, the series will be the second investment HBO Max has made into the Adventure Time IP, with four-part special Adventure Time: Distant Lands set to wrap this fall.

Fionna and Cake will take the titular heroes, genderbent versions of Adventure Time‘s Finn and Jake, “on a multiverse-hopping adventure and journey of self-discovery” with the help of former Ice King, Simon Petrikov, via Variety. IGN points out that casting has not been announced for the series, meaning it is not yet guaranteed that Madeleine Martin (Californication, JoJo’s Circus), Roz Ryan (Hercules, The Marvelous Misadventures of Flapjack) or Tom Kenny (SpongeBob SquarePants, Rick and Morty) will reprise their roles as Fionna, Cake and Simon, respectively.

The animated spinoff series also promises to introduce an entirely new enemy for Fionna and Cake to face-off against. Variety describes a “powerful new antagonist determined to track [Fionna and Cake] down and erase them from existence lurks in the shadows.”

Fionna and Cake, introduced in Adventure Time’s third season, are fictional “products of the Ice King’s in-universe fanfiction” (Polygon). It’s unknown whether the former Ice King’s other genderbent machinations, such as fan-favorite character Marshall Lee, will also be put at risk by this mysterious new antagonist.

Though the cast of new and returning characters is currently unconfirmed, Adam Muto (Adventure Time, Steven Universe) will revisit the Land of Ooo as Adventure Time: Fionna and Cake’s showrunner. Variety confirms that Cartoon Network Studios will likewise return to produce the HBO Max series.

Adventure Time truly broke the mold and earned legions of passionate fans in the process,” Variety quoted HBO’s Senior Vice President of Comedy and Original Animation for HBO Max, Billy Wee. “We are thrilled to partner with our friends at Cartoon Network Studios to continue innovating and expanding the Adventure Time universe with this world class team.”

Announced Tuesday, a timeline or information as to whether the series plans for multiple seasons are not yet available for Adventure Time’s newest spinoff.
