Adam Muto’s ‘Adventure Time’ is coming to an end on Cartoon Network after 10 memorable seasons

September 3rd bodes to be a bittersweet day with the series finale of our beloved show, Adventure Time. Since its pilot in 2010, the Land of Ooo never failed to entertain us with its unusual elements and the world of fantasy. Although the show is so successful now and talked up by many celebrities, it was not meant to last this long – according to Cartoon Network. The fight was on for creative freedom. “Cartoon Network was not afraid to say no,” says series showrunner Adam Muto. “We had to make the case to them. … I remember the early days and how we had to fight.”

Once the show displayed its high ratings, Cartoon Network finally awarded it with full creative control. That was the beginning of something special for animated cartoons. It featured some of our favorite characters with Finn the Human, Jake the Dog, Ice King, Princess Bubblegum, Marceline the Vampire Queen, and Lady Rainicorn.

How do you send off a show like Adventure Time into the sunset? With the pressure from its hardcore fans, Muto contemplated many things – one of which included a soundtrack. Rebecca Sugar, former Adventure Time writer and storyboard artist, will return to the series finale with a very special song fitting for all things nostalgic.  “A song is more effective than a bunch of people fighting,” says Muto. “And it was important to bring Rebecca back to write the song … because the role of songs have played in the show.”

For 10 seasons, everything has always been for the fans. “I do hope they feel something — the most I can hope for is that they feel something. Happiness, joy, sadness. I just hope they feel something. It’s so collaborative — the writers, designers, the crew — it’s too much to pin on one person. I was very fortunate to work with this crew,” he says. “We were very fortunate that people watched and liked it.”
