ABC’s ‘The Middle’ Spin-off Titled ‘Sue Sue In the City’

The name of the spin-off of The Middle has just been revealed as Sue Sue in The City. This series is set to air on ABC, (also home to the original series) and will be starring Eden Sher, who has portrayed the role of Sue Heck throughout the nine years since the show’s premiere.

Sue Sue In The City will follow Sue in her adventure into the adult world in Chicago. Having come from the small town of Orson before graduating from college, the big city is bound to be an entirely new experience for the young woman, who will surely add a positive outlook and her typical silliness to the situation.

The Middle depicted Sue and her brothers, Axl and Brick, as they managed their relationships to one another and their parents, Mike and Frankie, who always seemed to be running around in an effort to make things calm(er). The show found immense success, having run for eight seasons before wrapping its last one in May. Before the show had even ended, however, talks were already taking place in support of a potential spin-off, as viewers did not yet want to let their favorite TV family go.

It was also announced today that Brock Ciarlelli will return as Brad Bottig in a Series Regular role for the spin-off. Brad was first introduced very early in the original series, having played Sue’s boyfriend in the first season before announcing that he was actually gay. The breakup did not ruin things for the two, however, as the pair remained best friends and were seen together often throughout the entirety of the series.

It is not yet known exactly what Sue will be up to in this newest chapter of her life, but the series finale of The Middle did provide a glimpse into the future. A flash forward scene even showed that Sue would marry Sean, her neighbor back in Orson. Although this may be something that is too hard to change now (if the writers desired to), there is still plenty of opportunities for Sue to explore tough challenges like love and personal growth in the spin-off.

The latest installment of the life of the Heck’s will be created and written by the same pair behind the original Middle series, Eileen Heisler and DeAnn Heline, keeping many fans excited to see exactly the same Sue they adored watching grow up. It is not yet known whether any of the other original cast members will make appearances on the spin-off series, though Atticus Shaffer (Brick) did announce that he had not been asked back as of last August. Neil Flynn, who portrayed Mike Heck, will be starring in the upcoming NBC sitcom Abby’s, and has not yet announced whether or not he will be appearing alongside Sher.
