ABC’s ‘Fresh Off the Boat’ Renewed For Sixth Season

ABC recently announced that its hit family comedy series, Fresh Off the Boat, will be renewed for a sixth season. The series is known for being the first network sitcom to feature an all Asian-American family and actors in starring roles since the 1994 Margaret Cho All American Girl series.

Starring Hudson Yang, Randall Park, and Constance Wu, the show was created by Nahnatchka Khan and loosely based on the life of chef and food personality Eddie Huang’s namesake book. Much like the source material, the series depicts the life of a Taiwanese-American family in Florida in the 1990s, as they learn and grow through their interactions with friends and each other.

Stars Constance Wu and Randall Park portray the parents of the rap-loving teenager Eddie (Hudson Yang) and his younger overachieving siblings, Emery (Forrest Wheeler) and Evan (Ian Chen). Lucille Soong also stars as the family’s wheelchair-bound whip smart grandmother. Honey (Chelsey Crisp) and Marvin (Ray Wise) round out the cast as the family’s American neighbors.

The Season 5 finale of Fresh Off the Boat — which was its 101st episode — saw the Huangs take in a Taiwanese girl after Eddie causes a diplomatic incident in Taiwan, during an international school trip. The episode drew a total drew 3.11 million viewers, a strong reminder to the network of the series’ popularity which was also supported by UpTV and Freeform subsequent decision to license the series for cable syndication last summer — two months before the show was even eligible.

But despite all the good news, in a shocking twist, actress Constance Wu took to Twitter shortly after the announcement and expressed her disdain for the series’ renewal. So far, only fans have directly responded to her recent comments.
