ABC Orders Live-Action/Animated Pilot from ‘The Goldbergs’ Creators

‘Tis the season of pilot orders. We still have a second half of the current TV season to go, and as shows are slowly beginning to return from winter hiatus, the spotlight is already turning to the next TV season. Networks are already announcing what to expect, which means a lot of pilot orders. And I mean a lot.

Creator and executive producer Adam F. Goldberg and executive producer David Guarascio for ABC’s The Goldbergs have once again teamed up for an untitled pilot for which ABC has given an official order. Joining this dynamic duo is Oscar-winning former Disney animator Patrick Osborne whose credits include BoltTangled, and Wreck-it-Ralph. In 2014 Osborne made his writing and directing debut with the animated short feature Feast, which won an Oscar.

Why do they need an animator, you ask? Well, the premise of the show is about a bachelorette in her thirties whose imaginary friend she created when she was just a child pops unexpectedly back into her life.  The comedy will be a combination of live-action and animation, meaning the imaginary friend will be CGI. The main character’s animated imaginary friend appears in time to help the protagonist deal with meeting the man of her dreams who happens to be a divorced man with three kids. The unnamed imaginary friend will help the unnamed main character transition from single lady to family woman.

After a bidding war, ABC landed the pilot in October. At the time the series was conceived, the producers had a slightly different vision for the series. Initially, the main character was intended to be male rather than female. Other than setting a different tone for the upcoming pilot, this decision also helps differentiate the ABC pilot from Fox’s recently acquired live-action/animated comedy Son of Zorn. the Fox show will follow a male-lead who begins to interact with his CGI father who has been dead for years.

Considering the untitled pilot hails from the minds behind The Goldbergs, ABC is and appropriate home for the project. Goldberg, Guarascio, Osborne and Doug Robinson will executive produce the pilot and potential series.
