ABC is making tough decisions about their program schedule. After renewing a crop of established shows like The Good Doctor and A Million Little Things, the Disney-owned broadcaster has been forced to give the axe to several other programs on the network, according to TV Line.
Rebel made its ABC debut in April under the guidance of Grey’s Anatomy and Station 19 showrunner Krista Vernoff (Shameless), but after having aired mere five episodes, ABC has declared that the series will not be returning for a second season, via The Hollywood Reporter. The legal drama was inspired by the life of environmental activist-turned legal clerk Erin Brockovich and allegedly represented Vernoff’s first stab at creating a show of her own, Deadline reports.
Call Your Mother, like Rebel, is leaving the air after its first season on the network, according to The Hollywood Reporter. The multi-camera family sitcom was created by Kari Lizer (Will & Grace) and directed by Pamela Fryman (How I Met Your Mother). Production on the pilot was allegedly halted by the COVID-19 pandemic, which resulted in the delivery of straight-to-series order in May 2020, as reported by Deadline. Call Your Mother‘s series finale will air on ABC on Wednesday, May 19 at 9:30 P.M. Eastern.
American Housewife is coming to an end after season five, as reported by Deadline. The single-camera family comedy was the creation of Sarah Dunn (Bunheads), who allegedly left her role as an active producer on the program prior to the season five premiere, according to Deadline. The move was allegedly made in response to an ABC Signature Human Resources investigation incited by cast member Carly Hughes (Insatiable), who reportedly portrayed American Housewife‘s only Black series regular and exited the show after its abbreviated fourth season, via Deadline.
Mixed-ish, one of the two spinoffs with origins in the long-running family sitcom Black-ish, will not be coming back for third season on ABC, TV Line reports. In a post on her Instagram, series lead Arica Himmel (Thanksgiving) thanked the cast and crew for their contributions to the ’80s-set comedy and additionally invited viewers to watch the Mixed-ish series finale when it airs on Tuesday, May 18 at 9:30 P.M. Eastern.
Of all the recently cancelled ABC series, For Life appears to be the only program in active search of new home, according to Deadline. Sony Pictures TV, ABC Signature’s producing partner on the series, is allegedly seeking a deal with Disney-owned streamer Hulu: “Broadcast and basic cable series owned or co-owned by the net’s [sic] parent company, are… able to extend their runs by moving to sibling streamer,” via Deadline. ABC aired the For Life season two finale back in February.
Among the pilots the broadcaster has turned down are Acts of Crime from Mr. Robot creator Sam Esmail (The Resort) and Bucktown from The Conners producers Sara Gilbert (Dogs With Jobs) and Tom Werner (That ’70s Show), as reported by TV Line.
