High Potential was quickly renewed for a third season on ABC after the crime comedy-drama scored high viewing numbers and ratings in its two previous seasons. However, as the premiere date nears, creator and showrunner Todd Harthan has bid a respectful farewell to the project, according to a Screenrant report.

High Potential follows Morgan, played by Kaitlin Olsen, as she solves high-level crimes with the Los Angeles Police Department’s Major Crimes Division (MCD) as a consultant. The show originally began as an adaptation of the French-Belgian series HPI: Haut Potentiel Intellectuel.

Harthan’s resignation doesn’t come as a total surprise. According to Screenrant, early this year, Harthan (Rosewood, The Resident) announced he would be co-showrunner for the upcoming Disney+ series, Eragon TV, alongside Todd Helbing (Superman & Lois, The Flash).

In Harthan’s absence, the High Potential showrunner position was filled by Lilla and Nora Zuckerman, better known as the Zuckerman Sisters. This is a fitting pick. The Zuckermans were the first-season showrunners for the critical and commercial hit Poker Face, another American crime comedy-drama series. The Zuckerman Sisters are also credited with writing and producing series such as Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.

Before this announcement, audiences were already aware of the departure of one of the second season’s most central characters, Nick Wagner, played by Steve Howey (Shameless, True Lies), due to his announced one-year contract.

With the highly anticipated third season approaching, the show’s large fan base, established series identity, and new offscreen influences suggest High Potential has even more potential to live up to its name. But fans and Screenrant believe the series is in a strong position to do just that.

While waiting for the third season of High Potential to premiere in early 2027 on ABC, viewers can watch all prior seasons of High Potential and its source material, HPI, on Hulu.
