Marvel Zombies is a new show coming to Disney+, and is an expansion of the show Marvel’s What If…?, episode 5 from season 1, entitled “What If…Zombies!?” They both involve a zombie plague taking over the Marvel Universe, infecting our favorite heroes, and leaving a few survivors to try and stop the zombie apocalypse.
For this first episode, we meet our survivors, who eventually encounter some other survivors, and a battle ensues against the horde of familiar undead. The first thing that is noticeable about this show is the art and animation style. Of course, it is done using Marvel’s What If…? style of animation. The character designs and the way everything looks are reminiscent of Arcane with a hint of Multiverse of Madness. Certain things, like dust clouds and the way blood is animated and looks at some points, are a little off, but not off-putting, and create unique visuals.
Toward the beginning of the show, the dialogue is a little odd, but again, since the dialogue is coming from younger survivors, that might have been intentional. Also, at certain times, the environments in this episode get quite dark, and while it’s obviously not meant to be all bright and cheery, it would be nice to at least see some more detail on the zombies at certain points. This is especially true because the zombies seem pretty cool looking, but you would have a hard time telling that because of the lighting.
One problem that hopefully doesn’t affect the watch too much is the pacing of the story. The first episode felt like it moved a little too fast, especially with how the episode abruptly ended, being slightly anticlimactic and with a rushed feeling. But yet again, there are only four episodes of the show. The gore in the episode wasn’t high, but it was there, and with a show literally called Marvel Zombies, it better be bloody and gory.
All in all, the show looks promising, with only a few critiques so far. The beginning was a little weird with the way dialogue was formatted, and may have to do with how some lines were delivered, but that wasn’t a huge deal, and didn’t detract from the episode. Hopefully, in the next episode, the blood and gore will be a little higher. We need to see some more guts.
