In episode 6, “The Splintered Paddle,” growing divisiveness within each camp births a devastating alliance, just as another enemy arrives on the islands’ shores. Kamehameha’s peaceful philosophy runs counter to K’iana and Moku, who prepare their warriors with the Paleskins’ red-mouth weapons. However, Ka’ahumanu supports her husband’s diplomatic approach, moving Kupuohi to reason with her cousin, Keōua. Keōua refuses this peaceful option, promising revenge against Kamehameha.

In O’ahu, rumors of dissent are whispered behind Kahekili’s back, as many seek Prince Kupule to take his place. Instead of defying his father, he too attempts to reason with the mad king. But Kahekili is too far gone, believing any criticism is an innate blood infection that must be terminated.
Despite his refusal to ally with Kamehameha, Keōua knows he is no match for a unified Hawai’i and the red-mouth weapons. He swallows his pride and vows to support Kahekili in exchange for an attack on Kamehameha. However, the cruel king cannot be trusted.
Amidst the growing tension, doubt in Ka’iana’s loyalty surfaces, as he has maintained many of the Paleskins’ habits, from speaking in English to wearing their apparel. This mistrust could serve a greater danger as Marley and the other colonizers from the Philippines arrive on the island seeking to become masters of the domain.

This episode was another intriguing entry focusing on the political scheming amongst the kingdoms. Great performances paired with solid storytelling and editing showcase the richness of the narrative. While Kamehameha’s perspective is admirable, history shows that the purest of hearts cannot survive the inevitable violence; he’s too good for this world, and it seems his open palm will be his downfall. Simultaneously, we see the precarious predicament Ka’ahumanu finds herself in. Forced to be this man’s neck, steering him to embrace this position, but now is admonished for having too much influence; another sign of the patriarchal stronghold she’s forced to balance. And kudos to Temuera Morrison and Cliff Curtis, two veteran actors, delivering masterful work.
Overall, episode 6 is a satisfying and escalating addition to the thrilling historical drama.
