YouTube Original Comedy ‘Wayne’ From ‘Deadpool’ Writers Arrives on Amazon Prime

Wayne, a gory, action-packed teen comedy produced by the screenwriting team of Paul Wernick and Rhett Reese (Deadpool, Zombieland), made it to Amazon Prime on November 6th, as reported by Express U.K. Prime is actually not the first platform that has hosted Wayne. Wernick and Reese’s coming-of-age series originally debuted in January 2019 as YouTube Original, meaning it was exclusively available to those who had paid $11.99 a month for YouTube Premium. It is currently still available through the service, much like the dance drama Step Up: High Water, which rebranded itself as Starz original in May, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Additionally, the first two seasons of Cobra Kai remain accessible to YouTube Premium subscribers, despite the action dramedy’s move to Netflix, TV Insider reports.

Wayne follows the misadventures of the titular character as he goes on a journey to recover his late father’s stolen vintage muscle car. His quest takes him from Massachusetts to Florida, according to Express U.K. In an interview with Slash Film conducted around the time of the series’ YouTube debut, Wernick described Wayne as “John Wick meets John Hughes.”

Wernick and Reese also told Slash Film about how attached they had become to Wayne‘s world. “We want multiple seasons of this thing because we think it merits them,” said Reese. “We want to do this forever, we love it so much and love the characters,” Wernick stated. Mark McKenna (Sing Street, The Winter Lake), who plays Wayne, wrote on Instagram that a second season was not entirely out of the question as long as Prime subscribers demonstrated their enthusiasm for the first season.

The show’s creator Shawn Simmons (Mr. Pickles, Man Up!) spoke to ScreenRant about how comfortable he’d be going into a potential second season: “Let’s just say I know what it is. It’s gonna be very easy for the writers’ room again, because I’ve had a long time to think about it… Everyone’s dying to go back to work and do this. You don’t always get that. That’s my hope, that we do well on Amazon.”

The first season of Wayne is available to stream on Amazon Prime, priced at $8.99 a month.
