Netflix’s YOU has finally begun production, Comicbook.com reports. The streamer shared an Instagram post to deliver picture of Joe Goldberg, played by Penn Badgley (Gossip Girl, Easy A, What I Like About You) to fans of the series. This fifth season will be the last one and it will be located in New York, where it all began back in the first season. The image states, “Back to where it all began. The 5th and final season of YOU is now in production,” and it can be seen here.
The news of the fifth season beginning production, according to Comicbook.com, has been released after the streamer added major names to the cast, including The Flight Attendant alum Griffin Matthews (#Screamers, She-Hulk: Attorney at Law, Doll & Em), Pitch Perfect alum Anna Camp (True Blood, Desperados, How I Met Your Mother), and The Handmaid’s Tale alum Madeline Brewer (Hustlers, Shining Girls, Orange Is the New Black), all three as series regulars.
According to Comicbook.com, the streamer plotline for YOU is the following: “Based on Caroline Kepnes’ best-selling novel of the same name, ‘What would you do for love?’ When brilliant bookstore manager crosses paths with an aspiring writer, his answer becomes clear: anything. Using the internet and social media as his tools to gather the most intimate of details and get close to her, a charming and awkward crush quickly becomes an obsession as he quietly and strategically removes every obstacle – and person – in his way.”
The fourth season was set in London, according to Comicbook.com, and now, it will go back to the beginning, New York City, Joe’s home. Series creators Sarah Schechter (The Flight Attendant, Superman & Lois, All American) and Greg Berlanti (DC’s Legends of Tomorrow, The Flash, Arrow) have shared a statement back when the series was renewed for a final season.
“We are so incredibly grateful to Netflix and Sera [Gamble] and everyone that has been a part of this show from the beginning. Sera is the most brilliant writer and partner and she will remain a key part of the YOU family as an executive producer,” Berlanti and Schechter explained, via Comicbook.com. “We intend to bring her every idea we can from our company for years to come. Ever since our friends at Alloy shared Caroline Kepnes’ fantastic book we have always conceived it as a five-season journey. We are excited to continue our relationship with Mike [Foley] and Justin [Lo] as they take over the reins as co-showrunners and prepare to bring Joe Goldberg home.”
The fifth season of YOU doesn’t have a premiere date yet, but its first four seasons are available for streaming on Netflix.
