Will Anne Rice’s ‘Sleeping Beauty’ Become TV’s New ‘Fifty Shades of Grey’?

Advertised as “If you liked ’50 Shades of Grey’, you’ll lovee this”, Anne Rice’s best-selling book series The Sleeping Beauty is being adapted by Televisa USA into a TV series, The Hollywood Reporter has learned.

The series, set in a medieval fantasy world, was first published in 1983-95 as The Claiming of Sleeping Beauty, Beauty’s Punishment, and Beauty’s Release. The trilogy trails a young princess, similar to Sleeping Beauty, who is awakened from a long sleep spell. However, the means by which she is awakened is a little more promiscuous than the innocent Disney fairytale we all know and love.

Of course, this series has raised some controversy, but it only fuels the cult of devoted readers to the very detailed, sexual series. Additionally, The Hollwood Reporter has learned that Dallas Buyers Club producer, Rachel Winter, will take the reins on developing the book series for TV.

“I wrote this to be fun, in the belief that dominance and submission can be romantic and delightful as well as erotic,” said Rice, who noted in February that she’s prepping a fourth book in the series, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Assuming that Sleeping Beauty go to series, it would be Rice’s first scripted show after Showtime adapted The Feast of All Saints as a miniseries in 2001.
