‘What If’ Season Two to Feature an Episode Based on ‘Black Widow’ Film

As Marvel’s What If…? continues to tell Marvel’s wildest stories within the multiverse, the team is already gearing up for season two. In an interview with The Direct, production designer Paul Lasaine alluded that season two will feature a story based on the recent Black Widow solo film.

What If…? tells various stories of the various branches of the MCU timeline, after breaking at the end of Loki. Each episode focuses on an event within an MCU film and tells what happened if it had occurred differently.

A second season was confirmed to be in development back in December 2019, months after the series was announced at Marvel’s Hall H presentation at San Diego Comic-Con. Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige also confirmed that season two will include stories from Phase Four films.

When asked about potential episodes for season two, Lasaine responded to The Direct, “There’s an episode that is based on one of the movies that literally just came out with the woman with the red hair…”, obviously referring to Black Widow.

Black Widow has already been feature prominently in What If…? In episode three, titled “What If… the World Lost Its Mightiest Heroes?”, Natasha Romanoff was put in the middle of a conspiracy that killed all potential candidates of the Avengers Initiatives one-by-one. Black Widow is set to appear in another episode that would tell what would happen if Ultron achieved global genocide, and she is the sole survivor of an apocalypse.

There are a lot of potential stories that can come from Black Widow, but there’s no telling what direction the team would go in this time. Viewers will still expect a story that is wild in storytelling and unique in its choices.

Scarlett Johanssen (Marriage Story) did not reprise her role as Romanoff in the animated series. After her legal tussle with Disney, she probably would not return any time soon. Lake Bell (Boston Legal) voiced the character in the series.

What If…? streams every Wednesday, exclusively on Disney+.
