Showtime’s Emmy and Golden Globe award winning show, Homeland, will be returning to television sometime this fall. The first trailer for season 5 has now been released (via Paste Magazine).
The American political thriller, Homeland, premiered on October 2, 2011. The show stars Claire Danes as Carrie Mathison, a bipolar intelligence officer working for the CIA. Homeland also stars Mandy Patinkin as Saul Berenson (Criminal Minds). The series focuses on terrorists threats against the United States of America. Season 1 through season 3 focused on Damian Lewis’ character, Nicholas Brody, and his looming threat to America. Season 5 is to be set in Germany, two and a half years after season 4. Carrie Mathison is no longer an intelligence officer working for the CIA but working for a private security firm. Season 5 will focus on Carrie’s disillusionment of the ‘war on terror’ and her estrangement from the CIA. As we reported back in November, the show was picked up for a twelve episode fifth season and will premiere in September 2015.
The series was developed by Howard Gordon (Tyrant) and Alex Gansa (Entourage) and was created by Gideon Raff (Prisoners of War). Season 4 of Homeland averaged about 1.6 million viewers a night.
After undergoing criticism of Homeland‘s large reoccurring focus on the United States’ involvement in the Middle East, David Nevins, Showtime’s president, talked about season five, “The show is ultimately about U.S. foreign policy, U.S. intelligence in the 21st century at a very difficult time. So we’re exploring a few different possibilities and may change it up a little bit … The real franchise of the show is how difficult it is to be America in the world in the 21st century, how difficult the choices are. I think that’s a story that will remain relevant for as long as they can come up with new stories” (Entertainment Weekly). Homeland is trying to move past Muslim extremist stories and focus on new storylines. Expect to see changes in season 5 of Homeland as it takes on a new plot set in Berlin, Germany and a different Carrie Mathison.
