In “The Series Finale,” the longest and final episode of Disney+’s WandaVision, a significant amount of loose ends from previous episodes were tied up while creating new questions, which will most likely be answered in future MCU adventures. Though, despite the episode’s title, a second season of the series is not completely off the table.
Continuing from the penultimate episode of WandaVision, Wanda is thrown into a series of battles with Agatha, who now has seized both Tommy and Billy for leverage. Agatha – now having learned that Wanda is the Scarlet Witch of legend – hopes she can absorb Wanda’s power for herself, claiming that it must go to “someone who knows what to do with it.” While she is soon able to take down Agatha enough for her to buy time to ensure the twins are brought to safety, Wanda finds herself encapsulated with the arrival of White Vision, a storyline that was teased in the post-credits scene in the previous episode. Obeying instructions from his leaders at S.W.O.R.D., he attempts to kill Wanda when the colored Vision arrives to tackle his doppelganger.
Now in the town square, Wanda finds herself at odds with what she’d thought she knew all along; Agatha has begun removing Wanda’s mind control from Westview citizens, allowing them to speak their minds and beg for either death or the ability to see their families. Losing control, Wanda opens the barrier around Westview and allows residents to escape just as S.W.O.R.D. notices the titular battle and enters the town. Meanwhile, Vision handles his doppelganger with words rather than lasers; after a long conversation about The Ship of Theseus, Vision reactivates the data that White Vision possesses, which grants him the memories needed to leave.
As the twins face-off with S.W.O.R.D. agents, Director Hayword is taken down just minutes after his arrival to Westview when Darcy makes her appearance in the funnel cake truck seen in episode seven and slams into his truck, exclaiming, “Have fun in prison!” Meanwhile, Wanda has blocked a now-available Vision from rejoining her battle with Agatha. Wanda eventually disables Agatha’s abilities to converts her back to her “nosy neighbor character” Agnes.
With Wanda and Vision fully aware that Westview cannot be fully reverted back to its original state without Wanda breaking the barrier and, in turn, destroying the family they’ve built inside it, they go home to tuck their sons into bed and say their goodbyes. In a tear-jerking finale, the couple awaits their fate as the glowing barrier grows nearer and nearer. Vision asks his wife about the nature of his reality, with only minutes left, to which she replies, “You, Vision, are the piece of the mind stone that lives in me. You are a body of wires and blood and bone that I created. You are my sadness and my hope. But mostly, you’re my love.” Despite this upsetting end to Vision’s story, he leaves fans with a ray of hope, “I have been a voice with no body. A body but not human. And now a memory made real. Who knows what I might be next? We have said goodbye before so it stands to reason…”
The barrier restores Westview back to the way it was as Vision disintegrates and all that is left is Wanda in the middle of their unbuilt house, in a state of grief. She then meets Monica in the center of town where she apologizes for her actions and for losing control of her powers when Monica responds that she would have brought back her mother if she was given the chance. Later, in one of Marvel’s infamous post-credit scenes, we see Wanda in a remote mountain cabin as she makes a cup of tea. Seconds later, we see a second Wanda, now looking like the Scarlet Witch, floating and studying the Darkhold as we hear the distant voices of her sons crying out for help.
Lots of new and old questions reined from this final episode of WandaVision that fans hope it won’t be the final season. Even so, we can hope to see Wanda’s story continue through the MCU.
Most recently, Wanda’s Elizabeth Olsen (Avengers: Endgame, Avengers: Age of Ultron) did appear in a skit entitled “FallonVision” with Jimmy Fallon on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon. The duo travels through the decades while conducting a series of interviews with different versions of Olsen in the COVID friendly Zoom session. Throughout the five-minute skit, Olsen becomes self-aware, questioning Fallon about the “little boxes” they’ve found themselves in as well as the laugh track she keeps hearing. This leads to Olsen’s monologue where she reassures Fallon, “I know the present is scary and we all want COVID to be over but you can’t just run from your problems.”
