USA Network has renewed Shooter for a third season, the network announced on Monday. The military drama, which is based on the 2007 film of the same name, stars Ryan Phillippe as Bob Lee Swagger.
The series follows a highly-decorated veteran, Bob Lee Swagger, who is coaxed back into action to prevent plot to kill the President.When Isaac Johnson (Omar Epps), Swagger’s former commanding officer, solicits his expertise in a secret operation, Swagger discovers that he has been framed and now has to protect his family and clear his name.
Season 3 of Shooter will be loosely based on Black Light, the second book in Stephen Hunter’s Bob Lee Swagger series. The renewal comes after Phillippe broke his leg in an off-set injury, which forced the Universal Cable Productions and Paramount TV-produced drama to shave two episodes from Season 2.
The show was inspired by the 2007 film starring Mark Wahlberg. Wahlberg serves as an executive producer of the series via his Closest to the Hole Productions. Wahlberg executive produces alongside Stephen Levinson of Leverage Entertainment and Lorenzo di Bonaventura along with John Hlavin, who wrote the pilot. Phillippe also serves as a producer. Shooter is a co-production with Universal Cable Productions and Paramount Television.
Shooter has been a solid performer for USA, remaining as one of USA’s highest-rated original series despite several delays due to the mass shootings that occurred in the country. Season 2 averaged 1.3 million viewers per episode and a 0.4 rating in adults 18-49.
Production of Season 3 is set to begin this January in Los Angeles.
