There will be no fourth season for USA’s Playing House. Creators and showrunners Jessica St. Clair and Lennon Parham announced in a video message via Twitter on Monday according to The Hollywood Reporter.
The network and studio made a joint statement on Monday saying, “USA Network and Universal Cable Productions want to thank Jessica, Lennon, and the entire cast and crew of Playing House for being amazing partners for three incredible, hilarious seasons. It was an honor and privilege to be part of this best friendship. Once a Jammer, always a Jammer.”
The comedy series premiered in 2014 on USA that St. Clair and Parham starred, wrote, and created. The half-hour show had a following, known as jammers, despite not having the best ratings. The cast included Keegan-Michael Key (Key & Peele), Zach Woods (The Office), Laurie Metcalf (Roseanne), Michaela Watkins (Casual), and recurring cast members Jane Kaczmarek (Malcolm in the Middle) and Lindsay Sloane (Sabrina the Teenage Witch).
Playing House was the only comedy series on the network, which USA decided to shift from comedy to darker, drama scripted shows. The decision to cancel the comedy series appeared to be an expected route for the network to take considering its current show listing. Playing House did well on digital streaming and on demand but did not demand the same attention on linear TV, which also fueled the decision to cancel.
Some fans refused to accept the news and are posting petitions to have streaming services Netflix or Hulu pick up the series. St. Clair and Parham reposted the petitions to spread the word. There still might be some hope for the “Jammers.”
