Upcoming French Streamer Salto Acquires Dark Comedy Series ‘Happily Married’

Happily Married, a French-language series, has become one of the first programme acquisitions to be announced by upcoming French streaming platform, Salto, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Having premiered in February 2020, the dark comedy follows a couple set in the 1970’s who are forced to confront the inconsistencies of their marriage after dropping their children off at camp. However, divorce does not seem to be an option in this couple’s devout Catholic province, so, they explore ways to reignite their passion. Instead of becoming more intimate, they become the most wanted criminal quartet in Quebec history.

Salto, which dubs itself as a French alternative to Netflix, was a joint effort by the commercial networks M6, TF1 and public broadcaster, France Télévisions, The Hollywood Reporter confirms.

Thomas Crosson, the French streamers head of content who negotiated a deal to have Cineflix Media handle its international sales, commented on Variety that Happily Married  “represents exactly what Salto wants to embody- an offering with bold and original content which has a perfect mix of freedom of tone and dark humour.”

Created for Radio-Canada Télé and Tou.Tv Extra, the 10-epsiode Happily Married was directed by writer François Létourneau (Paul à Québec, Tout le monde en parle) and Jean-François Rivard (Noël Blank, Soowitch). Talents on the series include Patrice Robitalle (Father and Guns 2, The Mirage), Karine Gonthier-Hyndman (Threesome, Les flots), Marilyn Castonguay (Matthias & Maxime, An Extraordinary Person), Létourneau, Sophie Desmarais (Heartbeats, The Forbidden Room), and Rémi-Pierre Paquin (Threesome, 1987).

The first season of Happily Married is produced by Montreal-based Productions Casablanca and premiered as an Official Selection at Berlinale Series 2020, Variety asserts. The streamer is expected to launch in the fall. View Happily Married’s season 1 trailer below.
