‘Unstable’ Shut Down During Second Season Production Due To Writers Strike

Netflix’s comedy series Unstable is one of the latest shows to stop production due to the writers’ strike, according to Deadline exclusive. The comedy series stars Rob Lowe (The Outsiders, St. Elmo’s Fire) and his son John Owen Lowe (Holiday in the Wild, 9-1-1: Lone Star), and was in the middle of the second season’s production.

According to TV Fanatic, six of the eight scripts for Unstable were already completed to get screening. According to Deadline, the employees were told earlier this week that they were being laid off at the end of the week.

As reported by Deadline, Rob Lowe was also on the picket line earlier this week. He said that he was walking in solidarity with the writers, “We’re only as good as the writing we get.”

Unstable centers around an introverted son, played by John Owen Lowe, who joins his highly successful and eccentric father, Rob Lowe, to save his thriving biotech company from catastrophe. This plot is inspired by the entertaining social media relationship between Rob and John Owen Lowe, where John Owen often humorously trolls his dad.

“Ellis Dragon is a universally admired, eccentric, narcissist-adjacent biotech entrepreneur working to make the world a better place. He’s also in an emotional free-fall. His son Jackson Dragon is… none of those things. Can Jackson save Ellis and his company and salvage their estranged relationship while also doing what may actually be impossible: escaping the shadow of his larger-than-life father?” Netflix’s official description reads, according to TV Fanatic.

Also included in the cast are Sian Clifford (Quiz, Life After Life) as Anna, Aaron Branch (Millennials, Christmas at the Ranch) as Malcolm, Rachel Marsh (iCarly, Just Beyond) as Luna, and Emma Ferreira (Learn to Swim, Midnight at the Paradise) as Ruby.

Creators of Unstable include both Rob and John Owen Lowe and Victor Fresco (Santa Clarita Diet, Mad About You). Executive producing Unstable is Marc Buckland (My Name Is Earl, Scrubs).
