TV Review of A&E’s ‘Love Prison’

The new social experiment brought to us by A&E, Love Prison, throws two online daters together who have never met. But that’s not all – these two cyber daters are trapped on a deserted island, left with only a bunk bed to sleep in. That being said, they are provided with a bottomless amount of alcohol to ensure some entertaining interactions.

You may be thinking to yourself, “This has been done before..”. Sure, the deserted island date is a little 2005, but here’s the catch: there is no film crew. Only 40 robotic cameras are the sole providers of all the film evidence on the island. They truly are the only one’s there. Being so cut off from technology, they are forced to entertain themselves. While it may seem to be similar to MTV’s Catfish, this was hardly as popular.

The show’s first participants were Billy and Jeanne – both parents, around 40, awkward, quiet, and prone to just lounge around all day on the island. Perhaps this is the ‘real’ Real World in that the camera crew is not prompting them to anything entertaining or notable. As honest as it may be, viewers found it almost too boring – as if they were watching themselves lounge around the house all day. While I do appreciate the rustic approach Love Prison has provided, I think sometimes we need a little escape.. which is sought through ‘fake’ reality shows that we all hate to admit we enjoy.
