‘Candela Obscura:’ Critical Role Announces One-Night-Only Live L.A. Show Of Horror Series

For one night only, fans of Critical Role’s horror offshoot, Candela Obscura, can experience the innovative storytelling live. Today, the Legend of Vox Machina creators announced a live show of the investigative horror series in Los Angeles on Saturday, May 25 at the United Theater on Broadway.

The official press release provides Candela Obscura‘s synopsis: “Set in a fictional world known as the Fairelands, Candela Obscura is an original anthology horror series that follows an esoteric order of investigators, ranging from professors to criminals to mediums, who join the secret order of “Candela Obscura” and work together to confront mysterious, chaotic, and supernatural forces. The general public is unaware of the otherworldly truths of these paranormal phenomena, and the organization known as Candela Obscura works to maintain that secrecy and keep the world safe. Leveraging gaming as a story mechanic, these esoteric protectors use guile and teamwork to root out ancient horrors before they spread throughout the Fairelands.”

The event will feature Critical Role members Matthew Mercer (Thundercats, Resident Evil: Damnation), Marisha Ray (The Legend of Vox Machina), and Laura Bailey (The Legend of Vox Machina, Call of Duty: Vanguard) along with a special guest, actor Khary Payton (The Walking Dead, Marvel 1943: Rise of Hydra). Joining them as Game Master is Spenser Starke (100 Thieves: Crash the Compound: National Treasure Scavenger Hunt, SourceFed). The event’s Master of Ceremonies will be Taliesin Jaffe (Mr. Mom, Hellsing).

Debuting in May of last year, Critical Role released the third season, Candela Obscura’s Circle of Tide & Bonein November. The third season focuses on the mysterious organization tasked to protect the Fairelands from magical threats. The cast included Mercer as the Game Master, Robbie Daymond (Hi-Fi Rush, Spider-Man) as Howard Margrove, Bailey as Argo Black, Anjali Bhimani (Ms. Marvel, Exandria Unlimited) as Charlotte Eaves, and Ashley Johnson (The Last of Us, Blindspot) as Auggie James.

Jaffe and Chris Lockey (Red Faction: Armageddon – The Machinima Miniseries, Chicks 101serve as the creators for Candela Obscura while Starke and Rowan Hall serve as lead designers and writers. Steve Failows (Graveyard Shift, Postal) directs and co-produces the series alongside Maxwell James (Savant: Kali 47, Thresher).

According to the press release, tickets are available Monday, April 29th at 10 a.m. PT via critrole.com/events. The night of the event, doors open at 6:45 p.m. PT, with the show starting at 8 p.m. PT. A special pre-show event will be offered to VIP ticket holders at 5:30 p.m. PT. A livestream of the performance will be available on Critical Role’s Twitch (twitch.tv/criticalrole) and YouTube (youtube.com/criticalrole) channels on May 30, 2024, with the VOD being made available on June 3, 2024.
