Ah, the 80’s; a time when buddy cop comedies seemed to grow right off the palm trees of sunny Hollywood, with such classics as Lethal Weapon, to Running Scared, even Tango & Cash, right on down to Turner & Hooch. Who could possibly forget the time Tom Hanks teamed up with man’s best friend to take bite out of crime on the mean streets of Cypress Hill, CA? Well, luckily you won’t have to try recalling it for much longer because Burn Notice creator Matt Nix and 20th Century Fox TV are currently working on adapting it into a new TV series for Disney+.
Though details regarding the series have been hush-hush and reps for Disney+ and 20th TV aren’t even yet officially commenting on the project, the premise is believed to stay true to the film’s original plot, following Detective Scott Turner and his trusty sidekick Hooch the dog. According to Deadline, the series has been in works for a while and only recently started gathering momentum.
It is known that Nix is acting as the Turner & Hooch series writer/executive producer, while 20th Century Fox TV, part of Disney TV Studios, is the studio that will house the project. It is the latest cooperation between studio divisions on both sides of the Disney-Fox merger as 20th TV is taking on a Touchstone Pictures title with Hanks’ classic buddy cop flick.
Turner & Hooch is just one of many movie adaptations making their way soon to Disney’s new streaming service; back in August Disney CEO Bob Iger announced via Fandom on Twitter that Home Alone, Night at the Museum, Cheaper by the Dozen and Diary of Wimpy Kid would all be receiving reboots, as well. And that’s not even mentioning the considerably large handful of other film-to-tv projects currently under development at nearly every other major network: with Amazon Prime Video producing Saoirse Ronan in a Hanna reboot, to Four Weddings and a Funeral coming to Hulu and The Dark Crystal coming to Netflix, someone will have to start writing new movies soon or otherwise what might the fate of television become?!
