‘Tis the Season: Netflix Releases First Trailer for ‘Bridgerton’

‘Tis the season for lies, deceit, romance, and ballgowns. The trailer for Shonda Rhimes’ (How to get Away with Murder) first Netflix original series Bridgerton is here and just in time for the holidays, via Indiewire

Rhimes, the creator behind ABC’s Scandal and Grey’s Anatomy, now transports us into the decadent Shondaland located at Netflix. This will be her first project at the streaming giant after signing a major deal with Netflix. Bridgerton is based upon the novel series written by Julia Quinn in which it follows the Bridgertons, a wealthy London family navigating high society with all its twists and turns.

Netflix released it’s official synopsis for the upcoming costume drama picked up via Indiewire: “Inspired by the bestselling novels, the series follows Daphne Bridgerton, the eldest daughter of the powerful Bridgerton family as she makes her debut onto Regency London’s competitive marriage market. As her pursuit of love unravels, the high society scandal sheet written by the mysterious Lady Whistledown casts criticisms on Daphne who has caught the eye of London’s most desirable duke…”

The first trailer which arrived on Monday is dressed to the nines with towering wigs, extravagant parties, and love triangles every which way. Dame Julie Andrews (Marry Poppins, The Princess Diaries) serves as the all knowing narrator of the series Lady Whistledown, a famous gossip columnist who’s face is never revealed. Declaring that “all is fair in love and war’ as the trailer begins, she chronicles the many Bridgerton children as they fall in and out of love with scandal looming.

Phoebe Dynevor (Snatch) stars as Daphne Bridgerton, a woman on the quest for love, depicted in the trailer as an independent spirit who is not easily lured or charmed. Regé-Jean Page (For the People) is the ever elusive and brooding Duke of Hastings and it seems that the two are destined to fall in love by the trailer’s end.

The series has an all star ensemble cast featuring Jonathan Bailey (Jack Ryan), Nicola Couglin (Derry Girls), Claudia Jesse (Vanity Fair), Lorraine Ashbourne (The Crown), Sabrina Bartlett (Victoria), and Adjoa Andoh (Invictus).

Chris Van Dusen (Scandal) serves as the series showrunner. Rhimes and Betsy Beers (200 Cigarettes) executive produce. The full first season will premiere on Netflix December 25.
