Timothy Olyphant To Reprise Emmy-Winning Role in FX’s Revival of ‘Justified’

Another former series is returning in a limited revival. Deadline reports FX has greenlighted Justified: City Primeval with original series star, Timothy Olyphant (The Crazies, The Mandalorian), set to return in his role as U.S. Marshal Raylan Givens. Deadline caught news last year that a return to the Justified world was in early development.

According to Deadline, the limited series will be based on Leonard’s City Primeval: High Noon in Detroit. We will see Givens eight years later, living as a part-time marshal and father to a 14-year-old girl. Givens will find himself redirected to Detroit after an odd encounter has him chasing a violent killer named Clement Mansell aka The Oklahoma Wildman. Mansell had previously evaded justice in Detroit and has returned killing with hopes of running scot-free once again.

Justified was one of the most critically acclaimed shows of the past decade and an adaptation of Elmore Leonard’s work that was so colorfully brought to life by Timothy Olyphant as Raylan Givens, Graham Yost and the entire team of producers, writers, directors and cast,” Eric Schrier, President of FX Entertainment, said via Deadline. “To have this group come together again with Tim as Raylan in a new and different Elmore Leonard story is thrilling. I want to thank our showrunners Dave and Michael and their fellow executive producers Tim, Graham, Sarah and Carl, the Elmore Leonard estate as well as our partners at Sony Pictures Television, for making this possible.”

The original series ran for six seasons, ending in 2015, according to Deadline. Based on the novels by Elmore Leonard (Rum Punch, Fire in the Hole), Justified followed Kentuckian Givens as he battled crime and the rules in his signature bucket cowboy hat. Created by Graham Yost (Wool, Boomtown), the series also starred Walton Goggins (Vice Principals, Fatman), Joelle Carter (A Perfect Man, Jessabelle), Jacob Pitts (EuroTrip, 21), Natalie Zea (La Brea, The Detour), Nick Searcy (Greater, Hotel Coppelia), and Erica Tazel (The Good Fight, Mr. Right). The critically-acclaimed series was nominated for eight Emmys, winning two and coveted a Peabody Award.

Olyphant and Yost will executive produce the series along with Dave Andron (Snowfall, Knight Rider) and Michael Dinner (Electric Dreams, Mayans M.C.), according to Deadline. Dinner will serve as the limited series’ director. Additional executive producers include Carl Beverly (Unbelievable, SEAL Team), Taylor Elmore (4400, The Stand), Peter Leonard (Voices of the Dead, Quiver), Chris Provenzano (Get Low, Thank You, Good Night), and Sarah Timberman (Masters of Sex, The Odd Couple). They are joined by consulting producer, author Walter Mosey (Blood Grove, Devil in a Blue Dress). The writing team will consist of V.J. Boyd (The Player, S.W.A.T.), Eisa Davis (House of Cards, She’s Gotta Have It), and Ingrid Escajeda (APB, Sneaky Pete). FX Productions and Sony Pictures TV will produce.

All six seasons of Justified are available to stream on Hulu.
