Thomas Gibson Considering a Return to Comedy After ‘Criminal Minds’ Firing

Two weeks after Thomas Gibson was fired from Criminal Minds, he’s looking at what to do with his career next after playing Supervisory Special Agent for the last 11 years. In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Gibson talks about what he’s thinking about doing next, which may feature his return to comedy.

“People always mention that they’d love to see me in a comedy again. Maybe it’s time — laughter being the best medicine,” Gibson said.

Before he was known for his role on Criminal Minds, Gibson played Greg Montgomery on ABC’s Dharma & Greg. The show focused on the relationship of Gibson’s Greg and Jenna Elfman’s Dharma, a couple who are complete opposites but get married after their first date. Dharma was more free-spirited, whereas Greg was more uptight. The show ran for five seasons from 1997 through 2002.

As for where Gibson thinks Dharma and Greg are now? He told People Magazine in 2014 that he thinks they’d be divorced now since they were fighting the last time viewers saw them on TV.

Gibson is also known for his role on Chicago Hope, where he played Daniel Nyland for three years.

Meanwhile, Gibson is still mulling over whether he’s going to file lawsuit over what happened in the events leading up to his firing. He also joined Twitter as a way to keep involved with fans and tweets out his thanks to his fans for staying with him.

There’s going to be a lot of change in the upcoming 12th season of Criminal Minds besides Gibson’s firing. This will be the first season where Shemar Moore won’t be appearing, as he left the show towards the end of the 11th season when his character left the Behavioral Analysis Unit to spend time with his newborn son. As way to make up for Moore’s exit, Adam Rodriguez was hired as a series regular back in the beginning June. Rodriguez will play Luke Alvez, a FBI agent who worked on a terrorism task force before his transfer to the BAU. And Aisha Tyler, who played Tara Lewis in a recurring capacity in season 11 of the show, has been promoted to series regular for the 12th season.

As a way to try and draw back old viewers, it was also announced that Paget Brewster, who plays fan favorite character Emily Prentiss, will be in multiple episodes of the new season. Brewster has taken to Twitter to document her return to the show.

Criminal Minds returns for its 12th season on Wednesday, Sept. 28 at 9 p.m. Gibson will appear in the first two episodes and there’s no word as to how his character will be written off the show.
