According to Deadline, The CW’s The Winchesters just had the most-watched series debut this season. It is small success for the injured company, which just underwent some significant changes a few weeks ago.
The Winchesters averaged 757,000 viewers on its first episode. This is the biggest debut since the show Naomi premiered in January 2022. The show is also the second most-watched premiere since the debut of Walker season three.
According to Deadline, The Winchesters was also CW’s most-watched telecast since June of 2022 when the season finale of Superman & Lois aired.
The show is a prequel to the show Supernatural. It followed brothers Sam Winchester played by Jared Padalecki (Walker, Gilmore Girls), and Dean Winchester played by Jensen Ackles (The Boys, Big Sky) as they hunt monsters around the United States. During the fifteen seasons of Supernatural, the viewers find out very little about Sam and Dean’s parents John played by Jeffrey Dean Morgan (The Walking Dead, Fall) and Mary played by Samantha Smith (9-1-1, The Devil’s Dolls). The information is revealed in bits and pieces since John tended to be secretive. The brothers know very little about their mother who was killed by a demon when Sam was just a baby. John then becomes obsessed with finding this demon, which forces Sam and Dean to become hunters. The demon then kills John at the beginning of season two, leaving the brothers with more questions than answers.
The Winchesters will be narrated by Dean and will tell the story of how John, now played by Drake Rodger (Not Alone, Murder RX), and Mary, now played by Meg Donnelly (Zombies, High School Musical: the series), met and how they went on to help the world, saving people and hunting things.
During New York Comic Con it was announced that Tom Welling (Smallville, Lucifer) will be joining the show this season as Samuel Campbell. This character was originally portrayed by Mitch Pileggi (Walker, Supergirl) in Supernatural. Samuel is Mary’s father and head of the Campbell Hunting family. It isn’t until Dean meets him in season three that they find out that their mother Mary was also a hunter. The brothers reunite with their grandfather in season six and discover there is more to him than they thought.
