The hit HBO summer TV show, The White Lotus, is getting the royal treatment as it’s been renewed for season two. Created, written, and directed by Mike White (School of Rock), the biting satire will return, but this time with a whole new cast and characters, as reported by Variety.
Originally planned to be a limited series, there’s one episode left of season one, which will air this upcoming Sunday on HBO. Now, it appears that The White Lotus is spreading its wings and turning into an anthology series, something White has indicated he’d like to do in various interviews. Talking to TV Line, White revealed there had been discussions about turning the series into an anthology: “We have had discussions, but it remains unresolved…” He went on to further remark to TV Line that he would like a season two, ““It would have to be a different hotel, like, say, The White Lotus: San Tropez or something…I don’t think you can credibly have [all the Season 1 guests] on the same vacation again…But maybe it could be a Marvel universe type thing, where some of them would come back.”
Now, it appears White’s dreams have come true, thanks in part to the rave reviews of The White Lotus in addition to its popularity amongst viewers. According to Variety, The White Lotus is the number one most-watched show on HBO Max consistently from week to week. A scathing satire, the first season takes place at The White Lotus, an exclusive and paradise-like hotel in Hawaii. But it’s anything like paradise, as the various rich guests turn into nightmares that the staff must deal with, all the while with a smile on their faces.
Francesca Orsi, HBO’s Executive Vice President of Programming, released a statement on the series renewal picked up by Variety: “Mike has once again delivered a quintessential HBO show, and it’s the talk of the town. We were thrilled to hear where he wanted to go next, after closing this epic chapter in Hawaii, and can’t wait to keep following him wherever he takes us.”
An all-star cast, the first season features Jennifer Coolidge (Legally Blonde), Connie Britton (Friday Night Lights), Murray Bartlett (Tales of the City), Sydney Sweeney (Euphoria), Fred Hechinger (Fear Street: 1994), Brittany O’Grady (Little Voice), Natasha Rothwell (Insecure), Alexandra Daddario (True Detective), Jake Lacy (High Fidelity), and Steve Zahn (The Good Lord Bird). The season one finale will air at 10 p.m. E.T. on HBO, Sunday, August 15, and will also be available to stream on HBO Max.
