Grammys must not have been enough for The Weeknd, as the famous singer-songwriter will try his hand in acting in a new HBO Max project. The show, titled The Idol, has tapped the Canadian to star in, co-write, and executive produce.
Via Deadline, The Weeknd, whose real name is Abel Tesfaye, will join Sam Levinson (Malcolm & Marie) in development of the series. Levinson is no stranger to the modern age of pop-culture that The Weeknd gained his stardom from. His main claim to fame is being the creator of Euphoria, another HBO Max show, which is a huge hit among teenagers and 20-somethings, the same audience of the singer. The duo seems to be a match made in television heaven.
Although the show is extremely early in development, some plot details have been revealed about The Idol. The series will delve into the dark side of Los Angeles and show business as it follows an up-and-coming female pop star. This star ends up kindling a romance with a wild club owner who is revealed to be the head of a mysterious cult. The actual role of The Weeknd has not been announced as of yet.
The singer-songwriter is no rookie when it comes to acting, though. Roles in Uncut Gems and American Dad have given Abel a great start in the business. In both roles he played as himself so playing a different character will be a new challenge.
Joseph Epstein (Health and Wellness) will join the duo of Tesfaye and Levinson as showrunner and writer on the series. Mary Laws (Succession) and The Weeknd’s manager, Wassim “Sal” Slaiby, will co-executive produce alongside the singer.
