The official trailer for Jon Favreau’s (Iron Man, The Lion King) Star Wars series, The Mandalorian, was released to the public at D23, a popular Disney conference. The Mandalorian is a new television series set in the Star Wars universe and it is the first live-action Star Wars show. The series was made for Disney’s upcoming streaming platform Disney+. The show will premiere on the streaming service on November 12th.

The Mandalorian was a passion project for Favreau who wrote four episodes before he signed on with Disney to make the show. He said “I wrote four of the episodes before I even had a deal, because I wanted to do this but only if they wanted to do the version that I wanted to do.” The Mandalorian is inspired by fan-favorite bounty hunter Boba Fett and his father Jango. The new Mandalorian character will be played by Pedro Pascal. Pascal is known for his roles as Oberyn Martell in Game of Thrones and Whiskey in Kingsman: The Golden Circle.
The main setting of the show will be on Tatooine, significant location for the Star Wars fanchise as it is the home of Luke Skywalker. Favreau wants to explore the time between the original trilogy, that ended with Star Wars: Return of the Jedi, and the new trilogy that began with Star Wars: The Force Awakens. Favreau teased he wanted to reveal a darker side of Star Wars. Favreau said, “I love the idea of the darker, freakier side of Star Wars, the Mad Max aspect of Star Wars.” The trailer provides audiences an example of how dark the new show could go. The opening shot is a pile of discarded Stormtrooper helmets in the sand with the next shot showing more helmets placed on spikes.
While the trailer hints at some of the action to come in the series, Favreau was more interested in telling a character-driven story. “The type of Star Wars that I’m inspired to tell is a smaller thing with new characters,” Favreau adds that The Mandalorian gives him the “opportunity to tell a story that’s bigger than television, but you don’t have the same expectations that a big holiday release has, which to me isn’t that type of Star Wars that comes out of me.”
The Mandalorian wasn’t the only new show to be teased at D23. Other projects include Ms. Marvel, a Lizzie McGuire revival, and a mockumentary called High School Musical: The Musical: The Series.
