‘The Third Day’ Is The Newest Collaboration Between HBO and Sky

It seems the critically acclaimed Chernobyl has opened a new chapter of partnership productions at HBO with Sky. Their newest announced collaboration, set to release next year, has been dubbed The Third Day and is set to star Jude Law.

According to Variety, the series will launch as a six-part limited series with help from Brad Pitt’s production company Plan B and Punchdrunk International, an immersive theatre outfit, in addition to HBO and Sky. Other creatives involved with the project include Marc Munden (National Treasure, Utopia) who will direct, and Dennis Kelly (Utopia, Pulling) and Adrian Sturges (Chimerica, The Enfield Haunting) who will produce. Kit de Waal and Dean O’Loughlin will be writers for the series.

The proposed series comes from the combined efforts of Kelly and Punchdrunk International’s Felix Barrett. The premise of the series is that Sam (Law) will be drawn to an obscure, mystical ‘Island’ just off of the British Coast where he will be thrown into the unconventional world of its enigmatic occupants. Cut off from the mainland, the rituals of the island will begin to overwhelm him, especially when he is forced to acknowledge a trauma from his past. As the line between what is real and what isn’t begins to blur, Sam will find himself immersed in a quest that will put him directly at odds with the islanders.

The Wrap reports that production on The Third Day is set to start in the UK in July. It will launch in the U.S. via HBO and internationally via Sky Atlantic some time in 2020. Other collaborations between the two production companies to look forward to in the meantime include Gangs of London, which will air on Cinemax, and Catherine the Great, with Helen Mirren in the eponymous role.

Jude Law most recently starred as Yon-Rogg in Disney’s Captain Marvel but is also known for more serious works like awards darling Vox Lux. He has even been nominated for an Oscar on multiple occasions for his work in The Talented Mr. Ripley and Cold Mountain. Law has also dabbled in television earning praise in the limited series The Young Pope and as a voice actor in Neo Yokio. It seems Law is really having a moment.
