The Roots Are Developing Two Series With Amazon

The Roots are branching out.

Awful jokes aside, The Roots have been a noted hip-hop band for quite some time now. The group has won several Grammy’s, and can be recognized for their work on television as the official house band for The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon.

Today, Deadline reported that two members of The Roots are developing two different series with Amazon. In an interesting twist, both series are expected to be children series in a two different formats: one live-action and one animated.

The animated series has been tentatively titled South Street Sounds. Keeping with a musical theme that closely ties with The Root’s brand, the show is about three friends who live in a neighborhood where they can’t help but make music. Seriously. The birds can keep time, people can’t stop dancing, and characters find themselves singing their hearts out. The three main characters Zora, Nick, and Tyson attempt to ride that rhythm to stardom, playing every gig they can. As of now, no details have been announced about the proposed live-action series.

However, both of these series will be executive produced by Tarik Trotter and Ahmir Thompson, as well as The Roots’ manager Shawn Gee and their company Passyunk Productions.

Trotter released a statement about the development, saying, “Our love for music started as young kids, and we hope to inspire a generation of future artists, musicians and music fans through the stories we tell and the music they hear on these shows.”

Ahmir (more affectionately known as “Questlove”) Thompson also voiced his support, saying, “As we venture into the world that is film and television production, we couldn’t think of a better partner than Amazon to help us develop these first two children’s projects.”
