The Mandalorian, Disney’s newest installment in the Star Wars saga, is set to take place in between the events of Return of the Jedi and the Force Awakens. The series will dabble further on the rise of the First Order, the central militaristic antagonist of the current trilogy, with books like Star Wars: Aftermath and Star Wars: Bloodline painting a clearer picture. It’s a safe bet that the First Order will have a lot of screen time as it opens up on the franchise’s history of fruition.
When speaking to Entertainment Weekly, director Dave Filoni and Creator Jon Favreau hinted that the show will explain the rise to Supreme Leader Snoke’s dictatorship and his not so subtle path to the becoming head of the First Order. “This doesn’t turn into good guy universe because you blew up two Death Stars,” Filoni explained. “You get that the Rebels won and they’re trying to establish a Republic, but there’s no way that could have set in for everybody all at once. You have in a Western where you’re out on the frontier and there might be Washington and they might have some marshals, but sometimes, good luck finding one.”
“Also, what could happen in the 30 years between celebrating the defeat of the Empire and then the First Order?” Jon Favreau added. “You come in on Episode VII, [the First Order are] not just starting out. They’re pretty far along.”
Other stars in the series will include Gina Carano (Deadpool), Giancarlo Esposito (Breaking Bad), Carl Weathers (Rocky), Taika Waititi (What We Do In The Shadows), and Ming-Na Wen (Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.). The Mandalorian will be the Star Wars franchise’s first live-action series. It will be available to stream only on Disney’s upcoming streaming service, Disney+, on November 12th.
