AMC’s series Better Call Saul will release the sixth season on April 18, via The Hollywood Reporter. This will be the final season of the series. The news came amid a wave of announcements AMC made during its Television Critics Association session Thursday.
Better Call Saul is a spin-off, prequel, and sequel to another AMC series, Breaking Bad. Saul features the story of Jimmy McGill, an earnest lawyer and former con artist turned greedy criminal defense attorney known as Saul Goodman. This upcoming season will be about the last days of Jimmy McGill’s journey before becoming the Saul Goodman viewers first met in Breaking Bad. We will also see the last glimpses at the identity of Gene Takovic, the Omaha Cinnabon manager, and the alias Saul takes on after the events of the original series.
A teaser of the final season is also available. The 15-second video features the Salamanca cousins walking over a crime scene.
Peter Gould (Too Big To Fail), the showrunner and co-creator of the show, expressed his excitment for the upcoming season. “In my eyes, this is our most ambitious, surprising, and, yes, heartbreaking season,” said Gould via The Hollywood Reporter. “Even under incredibly challenging circumstances, the whole Saul team — writers, cast, producers, directors, and crew — have outdone themselves. I couldn’t be more excited to share what we’ve accomplished together.”
Reportedly, the last season will contain 13 episodes. AMC will release these episodes in two parts. The first six episodes will air in April and May. Then, the series will take a six-week break. The second part of the season will begin airing in mid-July. By doing so, this season becomes eligible to compete for the Emmy Awards for both 2022 and 2023.
Bob Odenkirk (Little Women, Nobody), who plays the main role of Jimmy McGill, will continue playing his character for the last season. Odenkirk suffered a mild heart attack on set back in September. But he returned to work after six weeks.
The first four seasons of Better Call Saul are currently available on Netflix.
