Apple TV has dominated the Emmys with its recent horror comedy series, Widow’s Bay. According to Variety, at the beginning of Monday night’s ceremony, the comedy series had already obtained 14 awards at the Creative Emmys, including Guest Actress in a Comedy Series Betty Gilpin (GLOW, The Hunt). And at the primetime ceremony, it add six more including Lead Actor in a Comedy Series for Matthew Rhys (Invincible, Family Guy).
Reported by Variety, the series focuses om Mayor Tom Loftis (Rhys) wanting to revive the titled town of England Bay and turn it into a major tourist destination. Along the way though, he encounters some unfortunate obstacles which include poor wifi reception and the town’s history of being cursed.
According to Variety, the result of the ceremony showcased the streaming platform being the most successful this year, taking home 28 awards and including wins for series such as Palm Royale, Slow Horses and Pluribus. Following close behind Apple in second place was HBO Max, who obtained 21 Emmys for such series as The Pitt and DTF St. Louis. In a surprising shock, Netflix received third place with a total of 16 Emmys for series such as Beef and Bridgerton.
While HBO Max showcased tremendous strength in high-stakes drama and limited storytelling, Apple TV’s record-setting night underscored a shift in the streaming wars, proving that high-concept risk-taking can capture both critical acclaim and maximum industry gold. These compelling performance statistics serve as a wake-up call, prompting network executives and creative teams to collaborate on innovative storytelling, experiment with unproven concepts, and push production boundaries in a fierce bid to capture the top rating spot.
While Apple TV had the most-celebrated show last year in the comedy The Studio, it outhshined both HBO and Netflix for the most wins for the first time. All 10 episodes of its top series, Widow’s Bay, are all available to stream on Apple TV.
