It’s been two days since the Creative Arts Emmys were held on Sept. 5 and 6, and there were so many notable highlights. The award show gave praise to shows such as Spider-Noir, Widow’s Bay, The Pitt, DTF St. Louis, and The Late Show with Stephen Colbert.
For those who don’t know, the Creative Emmys is an award ceremony that highlights the great achievements in television. Such categories may include, acting, animation, and behind-the-scenes achievements as well. Out of all the series that were mentioned, the show Widow’s Bay managed to win eight Emmys. Following Widow’s Bay, was the series DTF St. Louis, with six Emmy awards. And coming in third was Spider-Noir with five Emmy awards.
The Pitt actor Ernest Harden Jr. (It’s Florida, Man, All That She Knew) went home a winner with his first Emmy for Outstanding Guest Actor in a Drama Series. Harden Jr. dedicated his acceptance speech to late actress Bette Davis (Wicked Stepmother, The Whales of August), whom he starred in the TV film White Mama. Harden thanked God, his wife, and wished that his parents and family were here to see this crowning achievement of his. The full acceptance speech can be found at the bottom of this article.
Apple TV’s Widow’s Bay is a horror-comedy series that tells a story about a skeptical mayor who is trying to turn his sleepy fishing community into a booming tourist attraction. Actress Betty Gilpin (The Lowdown, Office Romance) won an Emmy for Guest Actress in a Comedy Series for the series. According to Variety, the actress read this poem for her acceptance speech: “If by some fluke you win, a poem might give it a less boring spin. If you lose, whisper it drunk to your date, Allie Brie, whose toned shoulders we stand on for her work in TV. Thank you, ‘Widows Bay’ residents, [Katie] Dippold, [Hiro] Murai, to Hamish and Apple, our director Ti [West] To my reps Sean, Jenny, Andrea, Dara and Tony. Is it weird I say love you when we hang up the phony? (Sorry) “Rhymings of vulnerability cloak. What we do means so much to me. That part’s not a joke. Look, my family has nurses, a priest and a teacher. I’m a spray-tanned, narcissistic society leecher. But I want to thank all of the actors I’ve met — old ladies in dressing rooms, hot guys on sets. What a privilege to spend this life laughing at crafty, watching Shakespeare in theaters, half full and drafty. “Our business is stupid, but actors are the bomb. From Martindale to Milioti, my dad and my mom, to be cringe and elitist, which you’re free to find fault in. Let’s all lean toward Sam Shepard and less toward Sam Altman. “Thank you, Cosmo. My family, my daughters, friends — too many to name — my brothers Sam, Harry and my long dead dog Babe. Thank you.”
HBO’s DTF St. Louis is a dark comedy and crime miniseries that follows three middle-aged individuals who are entangled in a love triangle that leads to an untimely death. David Harbour (Evil Genius, GOAT) and Linda Cardellini (Regular Show: The Lost Tapes, Nonnas) became first-time Emmy winner for supporting actor and actress, respectively.
Prime Video’s Spider-Noir walked away with five Emmys, despite its cancellation after one season. The series takes place on a different Earth where in 1920’s New York, Ben Reilly is known as The Spider. In this noir-type series, Reilly is tasked with saving the city from individuals with superpowers and put a stop to gangster known as Silvermane.
Finally, in its final season, The Late Show with Stephen Colbert earned not one but two Emmy awards: Outstanding writing and Directing for a Variety Show.
