The highly popular comedy anime The Devil is a Part-Timer! is getting a second season after eight years off the air, according to Comic Book. The announcement reportedly arrived during Kadokawa Light Novel Expo 2021 during celebration of the tenth anniversary of the literary serial on which the anime is based, Anime News Network reports. A promotional video for the upcoming second season that features the first season’s opening title theme “ZERO!!” by Minami Kuribayashi (School Days) was uploaded to YouTube on March 6. The Devil is a Part-Timer! juxtaposes mythic fantasy elements with a contemporary setting for comedic effect: “Foiled by a hero when he’s inches away from conquering the world, the Devil finds himself in modern-day Tokyo. With no real-world skills to speak of, [he] is forced to make ends meet [by] flipping burgers in a fast food joint! To stall any further plans for world domination, the hero tracks the devil’s trail and takes on the… tasks of a telemarketer,” per Funimation‘s synopsis.
The promotional video confirms the return of several key voice actors for the second season. Ryōta Ōsaka (Black Clover) will reprise his role as the titular Devil, Yūki Ono (JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure: Diamond is Unbreakable) returns as the Devil’s demonic general-turned-housekeeper Alciel, and Yōko Hikasa (Mobile Suit Gundam: Iron-Blooded Orphans) will continue to voice Heroine Emilia Justina, who struggles with her feelings of affection for the Devil, as reported by Anime News Network.
The first season of the anime was produced by White Fox, the studio otherwise responsible for internationally known hit anime series such as Girls’ Last Tour, Steins;Gate and Re:Zero – Starting Life in Another World. The eight-year break between seasons of The Devil is Part-Timer! is far from atypical for the studio, who took almost four years to renew Re:Zero for a second season and let nearly seven years pass between the release of Steins;Gate and its sequel series Steins;Gate 0.
A lot has happened with the franchise in the time that has elapsed between The Devil is a Part-Timer!‘s season one finale and the release of the season two promotional video. Over twelve additional installments in the original light novel series have been published. Furthermore, dozen new volumes of the graphic novel adaptation have made their way into print with accompanying English-language translations. On top of all that, an alternate-timeline spinoff written by the novel series’ original author Satoshi Wagahara (Diego’s Colossus) where the characters exchange their part-time jobs for roles as present-day Japanese high school students completed five-volume run, according to Monsters & Critics.
Neither story details nor a release date for season two have been specified yet, Comic Book reports. Season one is available to watch in Japanese with English subtitles or as an English-language dub via Funimation.
