The CW’s ‘Stargirl’ Showrunner Geoff Johns Confirms A Spinoff Was Planned Prior to Cancellation

After three seasons, The CW’s Stargirl came to an end last week after it was previously announced that it would not be renewed for fourth season. Fans of the DC comics character brought to life may have missed out on a lot more after series creator Geoff Johns (The Flash, Shazam!) revealed a spinoff was in the works, according to Comicbook. Johns detailed the series had been laying the foundation for a potential spinoff throughout the last two seasons.

In an interview with TVLine, Johns explained how two character introductions would have opened the door for another series centered on Infinity Inc. and starring Ysa Penarejo (Gibby, The Secret Lives of Cheerleaders) and Tim Gabriel (S.W.A.T., Casual).

“Yes, I think there was a great show in Infinity Inc, with The Shade and Jade hunting down the remaining family members — the sons and daughters and nephews and nieces — of the original JSA, those who were born with power that didn’t yet unlock it,” Johns said via TVLine.

According to Johns, season two introduced viewers to Penaerjo’s Jennie Hayden aka Jade, who developed her powers after working with Brec Bassinger’s (Liar, Liar, Vampire, Killer Under the Bed) Stargirl and the Justice Society of America (JSA). Part of Jennie’s storyline was her search for her family – specifically her long-lost twin brother, Todd, played by Gabriel. In season three, her search found him living at a private institution that was to help him manifest his powers. They soon discover the institution, known as the Helix Institute, was causing more harm than good. With the help of Stargirl’s nemesis The Shade, played by Jonathan Cake (First Knight, Chuck), the team rescues Todd.

The spinoff featuring Jennie and Todd would have followed them searching for other relatives with similar shadow powers with The Shade as their mentor.

“I think there would’ve been something fun about watching The Shade as a villain trying to reform himself by recreating a new superhero team,” Johns told TVLine. “There would’ve been something really compelling about that as a show.”

With the end of Stargirl, the lone Arrowverse series still on the network is The Flash which airs its final and ninth season next year.

The third and final season of Stargirl is available to stream on The CW’s site. The first two seasons can be streamed on HBO Max.
