The CW renewed All American for a sixth season, marking the first scripted deal under its new ownership, Nexstar, earlier this year, according to Deadline. The early renewal comes before the fifth season broadcast on January 23, via Deadline. All American has been The CW’s number one linear series amongst ages 18-49, and the most-watched series on digital with the largest total audience across all platforms, according to Deadline.
All American follows star high school football player Spencer, played by Daniel Ezra (Prey, A Discovery of Witches), from South Central as he is recruited to play for Beverly Hills High School, and his two separate worlds collide. Season five of All American will begin with Spencer trying to do what is best for him and Olivia, played by Samantha Logan (13 Reasons Why, The Empty Man), to help them move on, via Deadline. The season will also begin with Billy, played by Taye Diggs (Chicago, Rent), having major decision hanging over his head while Laura, played by Monet Mazur (Stoned, Monster-In-Law), throws him a surprise roast birthday party; as well as Asher, played by Cody Christian (Pretty Little Liars, Teen Wolf), receiving advice about his speech with JJ, played by Hunter Clowdus (American Vandal, Bennett’s War), according to Deadline.
The series’ season six renewal breaks up a trend of many of The CW’s shows coming to an end, including DC’s Stargirl, The Flash, Riverdale, and Nancy Drew, via Deadline. New hire for President of Entertainment Brad Schwartz (Wisecrack, Popped) tells Deadline, “Over the last five seasons, All American has established itself as one of the all-time CW flagship franchises. All American is not only the network’s youngest series, but also the strongest performer when combining all our platforms. We look forward to continuing our collaboration with showrunner Nkechi Okoro Carroll, Greg Berlanti, Sarah Schechter, the entire creative team and the incredible cast for another season of captivating family drama.”
Alongside Diggs, Mazur, Ezra, Logan, Christian, and Clowdus, the series’ cast includes Michael Evans Behling (Grey’s Anatomy, A Cinderella Story: Starstruck), Greta Onieogou (Fever Pitch, Miss Sloane), Bre-Z (Empire, 16 Bars), Karimah Westbrook (The Rum Diary, Suburbicon), Chelsea Tavares (Fright Night, The Last of Us: Part II), Jalyn Hall (Till, Shaft), and Karim J. Grimes (For the Love of Jason, S.W.A.T.).
Deadline reports that All American will return with season six in the 2023-2024 broadcast season.
