‘The Crown’ Crowns Tobias Menzies as Prince Philip

Tobias Menzies from Outlander fame has been crowned as the next Prince Philip on season 3 of Netflix hit series The Crown. Previous speculation was that Paul Bettany was considering taking up the sceptre but he opted to not pursue the crown.

Mr Menzie has a laundry list of royal appointments in his background including Edmure Tulley on Game of Thrones, Brutus on HBO’s Rome and recently a role the Duke of Cornwall in BBC Films version of King Lear co-headling with Emma Thompson and Sir Anthony Hopkins. His current seat on the throne as Prince Philip is for two seasons.

Tobias is more popularly known these days in the dual roles of Frank and Black Jack Randall on Outlander. He has also been busy working with AMC on the new drama/horror show The Terror as James Fitzjames.

Show creators planned to change cast members from the outset. Claire Foy was recently replaced by Olivia Colman as Queen Elizabeth while Menzies is replacing Matt Smith. The Crown has not only made headlines with recasts of the main characters as they progress in age on the series but drew a little ire regarding inequalities in salary amongst the female cast.

It is anticipated that The Crown will introduce new characters in season 3 including Camila Bowles. The season will cover the years 1964 to 1976. Producer Suzanne Mackie released that tidbit of info back in April at the BFI & Radio Times Television Festival. “(Showrunner) Peter’s (Morgan) already talking about the most wonderful things,” Mackie said. “You start meeting Camilla Parker Bowles in season three.”

Stay tuned for more updates as production of The Crown’s 3rd season takes off.
