The anthology series is more popular than ever, and Jason Reitman’s 2005 film Thank You For Smoking is the latest to join the club.
Variety reports that Keshet Studios is adapting Reitman’s satirical look at the tobacco industry into an anthology series that will see each season focus on a different, ripped-from-the-headlines issue. The first season is looking to tackle the issue of gun control with the working subtitle Thank You For Shooting.
In large part due to Ryan Murphy and the popularity of American Horror Story, the anthology series has been making a comeback. Murphy has his hand in quite a few of them including Feud, American Crime Story, and now Pose. Outside of Murphy’s shows there is Noah Hawley’s Fargo, Charlie Brooker’s Black Mirror, ABC’s American Crime, HBO’s True Detective, TNT and M. Night Shyamalan’s upcoming Tales from the Crypt reboot and Syfy’s Channel Zero.
Along with adapting Thank You For Smoking Keshet Studios is developing pilots for ABC, CBS and NBC. ABC is getting the John Leguizamo-starring Salamander, a conspiracy thriller based on a Belgian series. For CBS, Keshet Studios is developing tech billionaire murder mystery The Wisdom of the Crowd. Finally, NBC is looking at Dean Georgaris’ patriotic military drama For God and Country.
