‘Terminator’ Anime Series, Helmed by ‘The Batman’ Writer Mattson Tomlin, in the Works at Netflix

A Terminator anime series is in the works at Netflix, according to Variety. Skydance, who produced the last two films in the series, will be producing the series in partnership with Production I.G., the studio responsible for Ghost in the Shell and B: The Beginning.

Plot details for the new entry have yet to be released, but John Derderian, Netflix’s vice president of Japanese and anime content, said the series will be a fresh entry in the franchise.

Terminator is one of the most iconic sci-fi stories ever created–and has only grown more relevant to our world over time,” Derderian said, according to Variety. “The new animated series will explore this universe in a way that has never been done before. We can’t wait for fans to experience this amazing new chapter in the epic battle between machines and humans.”

Mattson Tomlin (The Batman, Project Power), who will serve as showrunner and executive producer for the series, said he wants to take Terminator somewhere completely new.

“Anyone who knows my writing knows I believe in taking big swings and going for the heart,” Tomlin said, according to The Hollywood Reporter. “I’m honored that Netflix and Skydance have given me the opportunity to approach Terminator in a way that breaks conventions, subverts expectations and has real guts.”
