The Suits spinoff in production at NBC has found its leading star! According to The Hollywood Reporter, actor Stephen Amell (The Flash, Heels) is set to star in the spinoff entitled Suits: LA. The spinoff is derived from the legal drama Suits by USA Network that saw a fascinating uptick in streams on Netflix last year since concluding in 2011.
If the project is picked up and greenlit to go into production, this spinoff would be Amell’s comeback to the broadcast industry after eight seasons as the lead character, Arrow, on the 2012 CW network superhero series by the same name, which ended in 2020.
The spinoff comes from Suits creator Aaron Korsch (Pearson, The Deep End) and Universal Content Productions, or UCP, within Universal Studio Group, who developed the series in October after Suits was added to Netflix in June 2023 and later started booming in streams. The Hollywood Reporter notes that the series is also available on Peacock to stream.
As previously reported, NBC ordered a pilot of the spinoff on Feb. 1, and production is set to begin in late March in Vancouver. This could allow the spinoff to be added to the many series on NBC’s 2024-25 schedule lineup.
Amell will portray the lead character of a former New York prosecutor named Ted Black, who finds himself at the head of a Los Angeles firm that pursues entertainment and criminal law beside an old friend. The official logline for Suits: LA states: “His firm is at a crisis point, and in order to survive he must embrace a role he held in contempt his entire career,” via The Hollywood Reporter.
Suits: LA was written by Korsch, and executive producers include several other Suits alums, such as Gene Klein (Impulse, Covert Affairs), Doug Liman (Edge of Tomorrow, Swingers) and David Bartis (The Wall, Fair Game). The pilot will be executively produced and directed by Victoria Mahoney (Yelling to the Sky, The Morning Show).
Other credits for Amell include Heels, a pro wrestling drama series that ran for two seasons on Starz from 2021 until being canceled in 2023. As per The Hollywood Reporter, the premium cable service also had two more series on the chopping block following some cost cuts in fall 2023.
Amell was under fire during the start of the SAG-AFTRA strike when he said he did not support the labor action. The Hollywood Reporter also noted that he promptly set the record straight about his statements by making clear that he backed the union and its leadership.
Netflix is another network in partnership with Amell, as he will soon appear in the streamer’s sci-fi film Code 8: Part II with his cousin, Robbie Amell (The Duff, The Tomorrow People).
