Stephen Colbert Cancels Episodes of ‘The Late Show’ Due to A Ruptured Appendix

Due to a medical emergency, The Late Show host Stephen Colbert, will be delaying several shows. In an Instagram post shared by @colbertlateshow, it reads that Colbert suffered ruptured appendix following Thanksgiving. Via Deadline, “A message from Stephen: Sorry to say that I have to cancel our shows this week. I’m sure you’re thinking, Turkey overdose, Steve? Gravy boat capsize? Actually, I’m recovering from surgery for a ruptured appendix. I’m grateful to my doctors for their care and to Evie and the kids for putting up with me. Going forward, all emails to my appendix will be handled by my pancreas.”

Many A-list celebrities were scheduled to pay a visit to The Late Show set in New York City including Jennifer Garner (13 Going on 30), Baz Luhrmann (Elvis), Kelsey Grammer (Frasier), Jon Batiste (Be Who You Are), Patrick Stewart (Star Trek: The Next Generation), and Barbra Streisand (Meet the Fockers). The latest episode of season nine available to viewers through CBS.com aired on the 22nd and featured Peter Dinklage (Game of Thrones) and Tig Notaro (Your Place or Mine).

Colbert has been hosting The Late Show out of the Ed Sullivan Theater since 2015, previously hosted by David Letterman for 22 years. The show’s airing time reflects its title, gracing CBS weeknights at 11:35 pm EST. According to Deadline, The Late Show is produced by Colbert’s Spartina Productions and CBS. Jon Stewart (Big Daddy), Tom Purcell (Cosby), and Colbert himself serve as executive producers. The Late Show involves bits of comedy and satire, since Colbert is not just a television host but a comedian and political commentator.

Colbert’s canceled episodes this week is not the first time he has had to do the same; last month the host had Covid-19 and had to call off several episodes while he recovered. Nor Colbert or CBC have announced when the show will return following his surgery.
