Starz’s ‘Power Book III: Raising Kanan’ Receives Early Season Two Renewal

Starz has distributed an early renewal to its third Power series, the prequel entitled Raising Kanan, for its second season, according to The Hollywood ReporterThe mothership series ran for six seasons and followed James “Ghost” St. Patrick, played by Omari Hardwick (Spell), a wealthy nightclub owner who doubles as the leader of a drug empire.

Alongside Raising KananPower has also led to spinoffs such as Force and InfluenceRaising Kanan is slated to premiere its debut season on Starz on July 18 and stars Mekai Curtis (Kirby Buckets) as the teenage version of Kanan, who is played by Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson (Get Rich or Die Tryin’) in the original series. Set in the 1990s, the series follows 15-year-old Kanan, a cocaine distributor with connections to dealers across New York City. Patina Miller (Madam Secretary) was cast as his mother, Raquel “Raq” Thomas.

Starz President and CEO of Starz, Jeffrey Hirsch, expressed his excitement for having renewed the spinoff series prior to a series premiere, “One season isn’t enough to tell the coming of age story of Kanan Stark and his mother, Raq, a fierce and successful woman who is a force of nature. The anticipation globally for more of the Power Universe made it clear that the Kanan story needs to continue,” via The Hollywood Reporter

The spinoff series also features Omar Epps (Love and Basketball), London Brown (Ballers), Malcolm Mays (Snowfall), Hailey Kilgore (Respect), and Toby Sandeman (The Royals). Raising Kanan follows fellow Power spinoffs including Ghost, which was recently renewed for a second season, Force, which is currently in production, and an untitled fifth show in the franchise.
