‘Star Trek’ Gets Picked Up By Nickelodeon For Animated Series Adaptation

An upcoming CGI animated Star Trek series adaptation, has officially been put into production by CBS Television Studios and Nickelodeon, Variety has learned. The series will follow a group of teenagers who discover an abandoned Starfleet ship, and wind up going on new adventures that help them grow in the process.

Kevin and Dan Hageman — the duo responsible for Trollhunters and Ninjago: Masters of Spinjitzu— will help create the series in partnership with Eye Animation Productions, Secret Hideout, and Roddenberry Entertainment.

In a statement the pair also mentioned that “Star Trek, Nickelodeon, and the state of animation are doing incredibly ambitious things as of late. We couldn’t be more excited to jump aboard.”

Television writer Alex Kurtzman, who also executive produces the new series, followed up in his own official statement regarding the series’ aspirations:

Star Trek’s mission is to inspire generations of dreamers to build a brighter future. Dan and Kevin have crafted a story that honors its exploratory spirit in a way that’s never been done before, while the Nickelodeon team blew us away with their excitement at bringing ‘Trek’ to a younger generation around the world.

Kurtzman is also notorious for his five-year deal he signed with CBS TV last summer, that allows him to oversee all future Star Trek TV projects.

CBS All Access also gave a two-season order to a completely different Star Trek animated series from Rick & Morty writer Mike McMahan, named Star Trek: Lower Decks.

With this particular adaptation, targeting a more mature audience, while focusing on a support crew that serves on one of Starfleet’s least important ships. A premise ripe for comedic effect.

The announcement marks CBS TV Studios’ sixth overall Star Trek universe planned adaptation, with Star Trek: Discovery, and two other possible shows involving an untitled Captain Jean-Luc Picard project, and a  seperate drama following Michelle Yeoh’s Emperor/Captain Philippa Georgiou.
