Squirrel Girl and Marvel’s ‘New Warriors’ Ordered to Series on Freeform

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Freeform has finally ordered Marvel’s New Warriors for straight-to-series live action super-human comedy. Marvel fans can rejoice in this latest expansion of an ever-growing collection of comics turned television series.  Rumors and reports of Squirrel Girl’s appearance on the New Warriors team surfaced last year as the series concept was being eyed by several networks, many of whom competitively bid to host the Marvel show. Current network of Marvel’s upcoming new series Cloak and Dagger, Freeform, finally won out though. Freeform is Disney-owned and targets younger audiences than other live-action cable television networks. The Hollywood Reporter reports that Kevin Biegel will likely write the script and serve as showrunner for New Warriors.

The New Warriors are a squad of youthful superheroes that serve as a teen or young adult counterpart to The Avengers. They first appeared in 1989 as a collection of existing Marvel heroes, and have since gone through five volumes.

Squirrel Girl, otherwise known by her equally rhyming name Doreen Green, is extremely strong, fast, agile, and most importantly; has a really bushy tail. She also has the ability to communicate with squirrels and convince the terrifying fuzzy rodents to help her defeat her enemies. Squirrel Girl appears in many Marvel comics, and is more popular than many New Warriors members like Marvel Boy, Turbo, and Scarlet Spider.

Now all we need to know is whether singer and Pitch Perfect actress Anna Kendrick really meant it when she said she would love to play a half squirrel on television. Perhaps she’ll start angling for the part of Squirrel Girl.

Like Cloak and DaggerNew Warriors will not premiere until 2018. More imminent in the Marval universe is the IMAX premiere of Inhumans which will occur on Labor Day weekend of this year.
